Files above are browser-generated downloads. The archive was not uploaded.
How it works
Supports RAR4/RAR5 inspection and safe file extraction. Password-protected entries, links, unsafe paths and oversized entries are blocked rather than silently rewritten. Not supported yet: password-protected (encrypted) RAR files and multi-part RAR archives (.part1.rar, .r00).

What this RAR extractor actually opens
RAR is a proprietary archive format from win.rar GmbH. A single .rar file can hold many documents, photos or program files, plus the folder names that kept them organised. Two generations are still in everyday use. RAR4 is the older layout. RAR5 is the current one, with a different signature and a stronger checksum. Both files end in .rar, so the extension alone does not tell you which generation you have. This page reads the signature in your browser, labels the archive RAR4 or RAR5, and lists the entries before you save anything.
UnpackNest does not create RAR files and it does not upload the one you already have. The page loads a WebAssembly build of the extraction engine, then a Web Worker reads the bytes you selected. You can confirm that in the browser network panel: after the page itself has loaded, choosing a file should not start a request whose body is the archive. The same limit is spelled out in the privacy policy.
Use the tool, step by step
- Open this page on a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Phones work; give the tab a moment and do not switch apps while a large archive is being read.
- Drop a .rar file onto the box, or choose it from Downloads, Files or iCloud Drive. Pick the real archive, not a shortcut and not a single volume from a split set.
- Read the status line. It should name the generation (RAR4 or RAR5) and confirm that nothing was uploaded. If it reports an error code instead, copy that code before you retry.
- Scan the list. Folders, sizes and any blocked entries are shown before extraction. A blocked row is a decision, not a failure of the whole archive.
- Tick the files you need and press Extract selected, or use Extract all safe files. Only rows that passed the safety checks are written.
- Save each download from the browser prompt. On a phone the files usually land in the Downloads folder of the Files app. They are ordinary files again, no longer inside the RAR.
Safety checks you will see in the list
The worker refuses entries that would be dangerous or ambiguous if they were written to disk. A path that climbs out of the destination with .., an absolute path, a Windows drive path or a network path is blocked. Symbolic links and hard links are blocked because a link can point somewhere you did not intend to overwrite. Encrypted entries are blocked rather than half-decoded. An entry whose unpacked size is missing, or whose size is above the browser safety limit, is blocked so a hostile archive cannot exhaust the tab. Duplicate paths after normalisation are blocked too, because two names that look different can refer to one location.
None of these checks rewrites the archive to "make it work". If a row is blocked, extract the other rows and treat the blocked name as something to ask the sender about. The archive safety guide explains why that caution matters for files from email and chat.
Problems this page will not paper over
- Password-protected RAR. Archive encryption and encrypted file names are reported and then stopped. There is no password box on this page. A wrong password is not the same as a damaged file. Read password-protected archives before you start renaming or "repairing" anything.
- Multi-part RAR. Names such as
.part1.rar,.part2.raror the older.r00sequence are separate volumes. This page opens one file. It cannot reassemble a set. See multi-part RAR and split ZIP. - A download that was cut off. The status line will say the archive looks incomplete, corrupt, or not a RAR. Compare the size with the size the sender quoted, then download again. Repair tricks on a short download rarely recover a missing end of file.
- The phone reloads the tab. Mobile browsers kill tabs that use too much memory. Extract fewer files at once, or move the archive to a computer. That is a device limit, not an upload.
Questions people ask on this page
Is a RAR the same as a ZIP?
No. ZIP is an open format that Windows, macOS and phones open by themselves. RAR needs a reader that understands RAR4 or RAR5. The comparison, including when a sender should have used ZIP instead, is in ZIP versus RAR versus 7z.
Can I open a RAR on an iPhone here?
Yes for a normal single-volume RAR4 or RAR5 that is not encrypted. Safari can download the result into Files. The iPhone-specific path, including Mail attachments and iCloud, is how to open a RAR on iPhone. Android has its own notes in open a RAR on Android.
Why is one file inside a healthy archive blocked?
Look at the reason next to that row. Encrypted, linked and unsafe paths are blocked on purpose. A solid archive can also make one damaged file affect later files; solid compression explains that behaviour. If you only need a single document, extract one file is the calmer workflow.
Where should I read next if the file still will not open?
