How to Open a RAR File on iPhone and iPad
The Files app on iPhone and iPad opens ZIP archives with a tap and does nothing useful with a RAR. Mail and Messages will show the attachment, then stall or offer Share. You do not need a random App Store extractor that asks for photo access. A current Safari or Chrome tab can read a normal single-volume RAR on the phone itself.

Why iOS does not open RAR by itself
Apple's built-in unarchiver understands ZIP. RAR is a different family, with two generations still in circulation (RAR4 and RAR5), and iOS has never shipped a RAR decoder. That is why a .rar in Files looks like a document you cannot preview, and why "Open in" often lists apps that only want to upload the file somewhere else. The extension is a hint, not a guarantee: people rename ZIP and 7z files to .rar, and iOS will still refuse them for the same reason.
A browser extractor sidesteps the missing decoder by loading the reader as part of the page, then reading the file you pick from local storage. The archive does not have to be sent to a website in order to be listed. If you want to verify that claim for UnpackNest or for any other site, the steps are in the browser privacy guide, using the network panel that Safari and Chrome both expose.
Save the RAR somewhere Files can see
iOS will not let a web page reach into Mail's private attachment store. Put the file in a place the file picker can show.
- If it arrived in Mail, touch and hold the attachment, choose Share, then Save to Files. Pick On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, not a random third-party provider you do not recognise.
- If it arrived in Messages or WhatsApp, tap the file, use the share sheet, and save to Files the same way. Chat apps sometimes keep only a thumbnail until you tap download.
- If Safari already downloaded it, open Files, then Browse, then On My iPhone, then Downloads. That folder is easy to miss because it is not on the first screen.
- If the file lives in iCloud Drive and still shows a cloud icon, tap it once and wait until the download finishes. A picker that opens a not-yet-downloaded iCloud file can hand the page a stub.
Give the file a moment. A RAR that is still arriving will look truncated, and a truncated RAR fails signature checks even when the name is perfect.
Open it in the browser
- In Safari or Chrome, open the UnpackNest RAR tool.
- Tap the drop area and choose the file from Browse. On iPad with a keyboard, you can also drag the file onto the page from Files in Split View.
- Wait for the status line to name RAR4 or RAR5. That line is also where an error code appears. Leave the tab in the foreground; iOS is aggressive about suspending background tabs, and a suspended tab cannot finish a large read.
- Read the list before you extract. Blocked rows (encrypted entries, links, unsafe paths, oversized entries) are skipped on purpose. Tick the files you need.
- Extract, then accept the download. iOS places the result in Files under Downloads unless you have changed Safari's download location in Settings, Safari, Downloads.
Repeat for each file you need. Extracting everything at once on a phone with a small amount of free space is the usual way to get a "not enough memory" reload. One or two files at a time is calmer.
iPhone and iPad are not the same device
An iPad with Stage Manager or Split View can keep Files and Safari side by side, which makes it obvious whether the download landed. An iPhone cannot. After extraction, switch to Files yourself and sort Downloads by date. The saved file is a normal document again: a PDF opens in Files or Books, a photo opens in Preview, a spreadsheet may need Numbers or a share to the app that owns that type.
Low Power Mode and a warm phone both make Safari more willing to discard the tab. If the page reloads by itself halfway through a 400 MB archive, the work was not uploaded anywhere; it was thrown away locally. Plug the phone in, leave Low Power Mode off, and extract a smaller selection.
What this route will not do
| Situation | What you will see | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Password box never appears | The RAR tool reports encryption and stops | RAR passwords are not supported in the browser tool. Use a desktop reader you trust, and read the password guide before you type anything into a website |
| File is named part1 or ends in .r00 | One volume of a set | iOS cannot join the volumes in this tool. Collect every part on a computer. The multi-part guide explains the names |
| Mail says the attachment is too large | The message shows a link, not a file | Download from the link into Files first. A link to a cloud drive is not the RAR itself |
| "Not a RAR" | The bytes are HTML, a ZIP, or a partial download | Check the size against what the sender quoted. Open a renamed ZIP in the ZIP tool |
| The tab goes blank | iOS reclaimed memory | Extract fewer files, or move the archive to a Mac |
Apps from the store, and the permissions they ask for
Some free "RAR opener" apps are fine. Many are ad walls, and a few ask for photo library or contact access they do not need in order to unpack a document. If you install one, prefer an app that reads only the file you share to it, and decline photo access. Do not upload a contract or an identity scan to an unknown host just because the share sheet offered it. The browser route exists so you can avoid that choice for ordinary unencrypted RAR4 and RAR5 files.
A Mac in the same iCloud account can also take the file. AirDrop the RAR to the Mac, open it there, and put the result back in iCloud Drive if the phone only needed the PDF. That is often faster than fighting a memory limit.
After the file is out
Keep the original RAR until you have opened the extracted document and confirmed it is complete. Files does not warn you if you delete the archive first and the PDF then turns out to be truncated. If names look wrong, especially Arabic names, the archive may have been built with an old code page. Extract again with a desktop tool that lets you pick the encoding, rather than renaming every file by hand on the phone.
If a row was blocked as a link or as an unsafe path, do not hunt for a setting that forces it. Those blocks are the safety checks described on the RAR tool page. Ask the sender for a clean archive.
Frequently asked questions
The file opens on my computer but not on the iPhone
The phone is hitting a limit the computer does not: encryption, multiple volumes, or memory. Compare the exact error on the status line with the table above. A RAR5 file that is simply large will still open if you extract one entry and keep the tab in front.
Safari downloaded a file I cannot find
Open the Files app, Browse, On My iPhone, Downloads. If you use iCloud for Safari downloads, look in iCloud Drive, Downloads. The setting is under Settings, Safari, Downloads.
Can I preview the RAR without extracting?
The tool lists names and sizes without writing the files. That list is the preview. iOS Quick Look will not render a RAR.
Does the RAR leave the iPhone?
The extraction runs in the tab. Loading the page itself uses the network. The archive bytes are not an upload. You can watch the network panel while you open a test file if you want to see the difference.
